Child-friendly infrastructure

providing safe spaces for children to grow

project initiated in 2017
72 anganwadis | 2,932 children

The child-friendly infrastructure project aims to improve the learning environment in rural and under-resourced anganwadis and schools by creating safe, hygienic and engaging spaces that support health, learning and the overall development of children.

Under this initiative, Atul Foundation identifies severely underperforming anganwadis and undertakes structural repairs, renovation of toilets and kitchen spaces and restoration of basic facilities. Colourful educational wall designs and child-friendly infrastructure are incorporated to create cheerful and engaging environments that support curiosity, cognitive growth and early childhood development. The refurbished anganwadis have led to improved attendance, participation and learning outcomes, while anganwadi workers have reported greater ease in conducting activities and stronger engagement with children.

The project also supports the renovation and development of schools through improvements such as classroom repairs, construction of toilets and drinking water stations, development of internal roads and parking areas and creation of recreational spaces. These interventions help provide students with clean, secure and motivating learning environments that foster confidence, enhance the schooling experience and encourage regular attendance.

2025-26 highlights

  • renovated 8 anganwadi centres, benefiting 418 children
  • developed 3 children parks, creating recreational spaces for children
  • constructed 2 toilet blocks, improving sanitation and hygiene for 842 students
  • installed 2 drinking water systems for 673 children

Providing safe learning spaces

‘Earlier the leakage from ceilings made it difficult to conduct classes during monsoon. Now the shed with waterproofing allows our students to study comfortably even during heavy rainfall,’ shares the Principal of Mangelwad Prathmik Shala, Surwada.
